Moving To College? Pack Smart

August 14, 2014

College and movingThe transition from high school to college is one of the most significant changes you will experience in your life.  For incoming college freshmen it becomes a crazy mix of excitement, anxiety, fear and stress about being away from home with all new faces. Moving day is a big part of the experience so we gathered a few tips and resources to help you pack smarter and simplify your move.

Clothing

Most incoming freshman think they need to pack everything they own for college.  Keep in mind that most dorm rooms are fairly small with limited closet or storage space.  Clothing and attire are a bit less important in college than in high school so bring enough outfits for two to three weeks time. And be sure to fold your clothes to pack them to make your unpacking easier once you arrive. You’ll be doing laundry and wearing more casual clothing so pack light.

Furniture and decor

Same thought applies to the appliances, furniture and decorations for your room.  Remember that whatever you bring to your dorm you will need to pack up and take home at the end of the school year.  And with limited space you will want to be very selective taking the ‘must have’ items only.  Every college has its own rules about what you can bring, how you can decorate and what appliances are allowed in dorm rooms.  Make sure you know your school’s rules and pack light.

Two lists

Make a list of the items you will be buying and packing at home before you move.  Pack your clothes and food in storage bins that can be stowed under your bed without the need to unpack once you arrive.  Create a second list of items that you will buy once you get to your dorm.  Larger items like shelving, plastic crates, small appliances and side tables don’t need to come from home and can often be purchased locally.  If you are moving by car it will increase your chances of fitting everything from home into your vehicle.  And don’t forget to pack a few things that will help you feel at home in your dorm room. A favorite blanket or pillow, pictures and posters will add a sense of familiarity to your new space.

As soon as you can take the time to unpack and get settled.  The sooner you feel settled in the less likely you will feel homesick.  Don’t make the mistake of trying to live out of boxes or a suitcase.

Don’t forget that we help college students with moving too!
