Expert advice on moving

As professional movers we work with lots of different people, in lots of different places and under lots of different circumstances.  However, there are a few things we wish all our customers knew before we show up for the move.  These insider tips will help us to help you even more when it comes to providing you with the best possible moving experience.

Tip #1:  Be selective and smart about which boxes you use for moving.

The box your TV came in 15 years ago that’s been ripening in the cellar might be really big but, if it’s overripe then just toss it out.  Cardboard tends to deteriorate with age particularly in extreme environments. If your cellar is humid or attic is very hot and dry then don’t expect an old box to carry a new load of books.  The reality is that boxes get jostled around a bit during a move and the last thing we all want is to be picking up the pieces.

Tip #2:  If you can move a box then the movers can move a box.

In your drive to just get it done be careful not to over pack bigger boxes or containers.  And if you are using a box for heavier cargo be sure to reinforce the bottom by taping really well before you pack.  You can also use your linens to provide extra cushion the bottom of boxes before packing.

Tip #3  Use the right box for the job.

In our last blog we discussed the fact that boxes are the tools of the moving trade.  Using the right box for a hard to pack item is your best bet.  Items like a flat screen TV, stemware, fine china and other fragile items must be packed properly to avoid damage.  Make the investment in the best box for the item and we’ll both be really happy with the result.

Tip #4:  Mark every box or container.

Get yourself a couple of black markers that will write on most surfaces.  Knowing the contents of the box will keep you organized as you pack your belongings.   A clearly marked box goes directly to the right room when we arrive at your new home.  A clearly marked box also makes unpacking easier for you when you arrive.  You might want to pack a survivor box with the most important items for your first night.  Medicines, toiletries, and your kid’s favorite blanket are nice to locate easily.
